How to Get from Tirana to Theth
Theth looks close on a map and is not close in practice. It is a mountain village reached over a pass, and for most of its history the road closed for half the year. The road has changed a great deal in the last few years. The maths of the day has not changed as much as the asphalt has.

How far is Theth from Tirana, and how long does it take
It is around 170 km, and a realistic driving time is 3.5 to 4.5 hours without long stops. The first stretch, Tirana to Shkodër on the SH1, takes about an hour and a half. The second stretch, Koplik to Theth on the SH21 over the Qafa e Thorës (Thore Pass), is the part that takes the time: another two to two and a half hours of mountain road, regardless of how good the surface is.
Add a coffee stop in Shkodër or a look at Rozafa Castle on the way, and a one-way journey easily fills half a day.
The road: new paved SH21 versus the old track
For most of the 20th century the route to Theth was a rough track, passable in summer and cut off by snow the rest of the year. The SH21 is now fully asphalted from Koplik to Theth, and a normal rental car can manage it in good conditions. That is a real change from even a few years ago.
What has not changed is the altitude. The Thore Pass sits high enough that snow and ice can still close it in winter, paved or not. Most operators, ourselves included, run this route from May to October and treat anything outside that window as weather-dependent.
Bus, furgon or private driver
Shared furgons (minibuses) run from Tirana to Theth in the warmer months, usually once a day each way, with the exact time and departure point changing by season, so check locally before relying on one. They are the cheapest option and the least flexible: one departure, one return, and no stops along the way.
A private driver costs more but changes the shape of the day. You stop at Rozafa Castle or in Shkodër if you want to, you are not tied to someone else's timetable for the return, and the vehicle is waiting at the guesthouse door rather than at a bus stand.
What to do once you are in Theth
The village itself is small: a stone church, the old lock-in tower (Kulla e Ngujimit) that sheltered men under blood feud, and not much else to see without walking. The two short walks everyone does are the Grunas Waterfall, about an hour each way through forest to a 30-metre cascade, and the Blue Eye of Theth, a longer half-day out to a turquoise glacial pool, often shortened by sharing a minibus partway.
The Theth-Valbona pass is a different thing entirely: a 6 to 9 hour mountain trek to the next valley, not a casual afternoon walk, and not something a car can do. If that pass interests you, treat it as a full day's hike on its own, with accommodation booked at both ends.
Day trip or overnight? Why we recommend staying the night
On paper a day trip is possible: four hours up, a few hours in the village, four hours back. In practice it burns most of a sixteen-hour day on the road for perhaps two hours actually in Theth, with no time for both waterfall and Blue Eye, let alone either at a relaxed pace.
An overnight changes that completely. Arrive mid-afternoon, do the Grunas walk before dinner, and have the whole next morning for the Blue Eye before heading back. This is why our own two-day route up to Theth and on to Vermosh is built around a night in a local guesthouse rather than a long there-and-back day.
Common questions
- Is the road from Tirana to Theth paved now?
- Yes. The SH1 to Shkodër and the SH21 from Koplik to Theth are fully asphalted. A normal car can manage it in good weather; snow and ice can still close the Thore Pass in winter.
- How long does it take to drive from Tirana to Theth?
- About 3.5 to 4.5 hours for the roughly 170 km, split between an hour and a half on the main highway to Shkodër and two to two and a half hours on the mountain road from Koplik.
- Can you visit Theth as a day trip from Tirana?
- It is physically possible but not comfortable. With 7 to 9 hours of driving there and back, you are left with only a couple of hours in the village, not enough for both the Grunas Waterfall and the Blue Eye.
- Is there a bus from Tirana to Theth?
- Seasonal furgons run in summer, usually once a day each way, with timings that vary, so check locally before planning around one.
- Can you drive from Theth to Valbona?
- No. The two villages are linked by a 6 to 9 hour mountain pass on foot, not by road. A car has to go the long way round, which is what our Valbona trip does.
