Komani Lake from Tirana
The Komani Lake ferry is a working local boat that happens to run through one of the most dramatic pieces of scenery in Albania, cliffs rising straight out of the water for most of the crossing. It is also, honestly, a bit of a logistics puzzle from Tirana, because the dock is not on the way to anywhere else you are likely to be going except Valbona.

What the Komani ferry actually is
Komani Lake is a reservoir on the Drin river, and the ferry crosses it through a flooded gorge that regularly gets compared to a Scandinavian fjord: sheer limestone walls, turquoise water, almost no development along the shore. It began as, and still is, the daily transport link for villages that have no road.
How to get from Tirana to Koman
There is no direct public transport from Tirana to the Koman dock. The usual route is Tirana to Shkodër, about an hour and a half by road, then on to Koman by local minibus or taxi, a further 45 minutes to an hour. Minibuses from Shkodër toward Koman tend to leave early, around 6:30 am, timed to reach the dock before the morning ferry.
Driving yourself is straightforward as far as Koman; the dock has parking if you are leaving the car behind for a return crossing.
Ferry times and season
The main operator runs from Koman at around 09:00 and back from Fierzë at around 13:00, daily, through the season, which runs roughly mid-April to early November. A few smaller operators run slightly different times, so it is worth checking the day before rather than assuming one fixed schedule. The crossing itself takes about two and a half hours and costs in the region of €8 to 10 per foot passenger, more if you are taking a vehicle.
Outside the April-to-November season, services thin out or stop; this is a warm-half-of-the-year trip.
Combining Komani with Valbona
The ferry's natural use is as the scenic half of a route into Valbona: Shkodër to Koman, the crossing to Fierzë, then onward by road toward Bajram Curri and Valbona. It is the classic backpacker way in, and it is a full day of travel before you have even arrived.
Our own Valbona Valley trip does not take this ferry. It drives the longer road route via Kukës instead, which avoids the ferry's fixed timetable and lets the car go at your pace. If you specifically want the fjord crossing as part of your trip, a private driver can drop you at the Koman dock to do it independently, but the crossing itself is run by the ferry operator, on foot, not by our vehicle.
Is it worth doing as a day trip
A there-and-back ferry trip from Tirana in a single day is a very long one: travel to Koman, the crossing, a short stop, the crossing back, travel home. Most people who make the effort to reach Komani combine it with at least a night in Valbona or Theth rather than turning round at Fierzë.
Common questions
- How do you get from Tirana to the Komani ferry?
- Via Shkodër, about ninety minutes by road, then a local minibus or taxi on to the Koman dock, a further 45 minutes to an hour. There is no direct public transport from Tirana itself.
- What time does the Komani ferry leave?
- The main operator departs Koman around 09:00 and Fierzë around 13:00 daily in season. Times vary slightly between operators, so check the day before.
- How long is the Komani Lake ferry ride?
- About two and a half hours for the crossing, through a limestone gorge often compared to a fjord.
- Does the Tour Alb Valbona trip use the Komani ferry?
- No. It drives the longer road route via Kukës instead. A driver can drop you at the Koman dock separately if you want to do the ferry crossing on your own.
- Can you do Komani and Valbona in one day?
- Not comfortably. Most people combine the ferry with at least one night in Valbona or Theth rather than trying to do both as a single long day.
