Shkodra was ancient Scodra, capital of the Illyrian king Gentius until 168 BCE. Rozafa fortress carries the legend of the bride walled into its foundations.
Later it was the intellectual capital of Catholic northern Albania and home of the Marubi photographic dynasty from 1858, the oldest photo archive in the Balkans. The Lead Mosque (1773) survived the 1967 demolitions.
