The Diaspora

Arbëresh, Arvanites, Kosovo, and everyone who left after 1991.

More Albanians live outside the state than inside it.

  • Arbëresh, left for southern Italy in the 1400s after Skanderbeg's death, and still speak a 15th-century Albanian in roughly fifty villages. Recognised as a linguistic minority by Italy.
  • Arvanites, arrived in Greece even earlier and were central to the Greek war of independence.
  • Kosovo, over 90% Albanian; declared independence in 2008. The 1913 borders are why this is a separate entry at all.
  • North Macedonia, Montenegro, Presheva Valley, substantial long-settled populations.
  • The modern wave, after 1991, to Italy, Greece, Germany, the UK, Switzerland and the US.

This is why the world knows Albanian names without always knowing they are Albanian.
